Dot  About Us Dot About Us

The Arc is a non-profit organization formed nationally in 1950 to advocate for the inclusion of people with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities in all aspects of society and is established at the national, state, and local levels.

A small group of parents and other family members, friends of people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities, and professionals who work with them organized the Arc of Greater Houston in 1984.

We are now the largest Arc chapter in the State of Texas, with a membership base of 2000 and growing. The Arc of Greater Houston is an affiliate of The Arc of the United States and The Arc of Texas.

Our representatives serve on the Board of Directors of the state and national Arc organizations as well as on a number of state committees that address disability issues.

The Arc of Greater Houston works in collaboration with other agencies and organizations to facilitate the development of a wide array of options available to individuals and their families in our community.

We are a member-based organization that relies on membership and program fees, contributions from corporations, foundations, individuals, and contracts to implement and expand our programs and services for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

The Arc of Greater Houston has been instrumental in the creation of virtually every program service, right and benefit available to people with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities in the Metropolitan Houston area.
