Before a child with special needs legally becomes an adult (age 18 in Texas), caregivers may need to formally consider whether the child can independently manage finances and medical, legal and living decisions. The Arc of Greater Houston maintains the position that most individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are capable of managing their own life affairs with varying degrees of assistance from familiy members and or other caretakers.
