The Arc of Greater Houston believes it is important to recognize the role of siblings in our effort to
support individuals with intellectual disabilities and other related developmental needs and their families. With the exception of mothers,
siblings spend more time with children who have disabilities than any other family member. And, because the sibling relationship is the
longest-lasting relationship in the family, brothers and sisters are likely to experience concerns throughout their lives. Despite their
importance, siblings’ concerns are too often ignored. For everyone’s sake, parents and providers must learn more about life as a brother
or sister of a person with special needs. The roles that siblings play in their brothers’ and sisters’ health, happiness, and community
life are vital, and therefore, they should be provided with the support and information necessary to ensure the well being of all involved.
Sibshops is a peer support group for 5-13
year old brothers and sisters of children with special needs.
The group is in a recreational setting and is a mix of new
games, new friends, and discussion activities.
Participants should dress comfortably and be
ready for action! We'll also make and eat fun snacks! Each
session will have a maximum of 12 participants and wlil have
two trained facilitators and several volunteers.
Sibshops is currently located at the ECI Keep
Pace Infant Program located at 11920 Walters Road, Houston
TX, 77067-1956. The phone number is 713-696-2147.
Sibshops requires a $5.00 fee per session
and includes a snack or light lunch. Very limited scholarships
are available. Donations to the Sibshops scholarship fund
are gratefully accepted.
